Without even drawing his blade, Hijikata overwhelms the ronin with a chilling gaze, a manifestation of the weight of death that the Shinsengumi carries. Nio realizes that Hijikata is prepared to be stained with blood for the sake of a future he envisions. As Nio’s sword snaps during the chaos, Okita Soji intervenes, his strikes cutting through enemies with supernatural precision. Amidst the smoke and carnage, Hijikata coldly declares that they must become demons to pierce the night of this nation. Rather than despair, Nio finds his resolve cemented to walk this path of carnage. In the final scene, atop the burning roof of the Ikedaya, a spark of awakening ignites in Nio's eyes. He is no longer an innocent boy; the 'blue' of a true samurai has fully blossomed within him.
