Synopsis

Volume 33 slams the madness of the Espada head-on into Ichigo's limits. Snared in Szayelaporro's grotesque, cruel traps, Ishida and Renji are tortured without mercy. Meanwhile Ichigo squares off against a new enemy, Nnoitra, to protect Orihime and Nel—but the Espada's overwhelming strength grinds him down, and no matter how many times he strikes, nothing lands. Death closes in on a cornered Ichigo. Yet the little girl Nel, who has fought so desperately to shield him, is suddenly seized by a change no one saw coming, and the battle for Las Noches tilts in an impossible direction.

Beaten down by Nnoitra, Nel throws herself in the way to guard Ichigo—and in that instant her true identity is revealed. She is the former Espada, Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck. Reclaiming her Arrancar memories and power, she resurrects into the form of a mature warrior. Once his equal, Nel fights Nnoitra on more than even terms and shields the dying Ichigo. Elsewhere, Mayuri Kurotsuchi crashes the fight against Szayelaporro, opening a grotesque battle of wits between two mad scientists. The balance of power across Las Noches is overturned from the ground up.
