Synopsis

Bleach Vol. 40 delivers the rematch between Ichigo and Ulquiorra, remembered as one of the finest duels of the Arrancar arc. Once crushed by an overwhelming gap in strength, Ichigo shakes off his fear and hurls himself at his nemesis again with unbreakable resolve, all to rescue Orihime held captive in the enemy fortress of Las Noches. Faced with a grown Ichigo's counterattack, the ever-emotionless Ulquiorra finally resolves to unleash his true power. Signs of an unimaginable transformation hidden behind his rank begin to stir, and the fight rises beyond a mere clash of power into a story of the human heart.

⚠ Spoiler warning — tap to reveal
Though ranked as Espada number four, Ulquiorra secretly possesses a second-stage release, Resurreccion Segunda Etapa, that no other Arrancar has, making him the true strongest. This volume unveils his first release, and Ichigo is again driven to the edge by overwhelming force. Yet the heart of the story is how Ulquiorra, who dismissed emotion as meaningless, begins to ask what the heart truly is through his clash with Orihime and Ichigo. The words he murmurs as he crumbles to ash in the next volume's conclusion become one of the series' most legendary scenes. A pivotal volume on strength, emptiness, and where the human heart resides.
