Synopsis

The first-class mage exam reaches its climax. The surviving examinees advance to a personal interview with the proctor herself, Serie, the strongest mage alive. As the oldest of the elves, she shares a history with Flamme, Frieren's late master. The conversation between these two elves, meeting across centuries, draws out Frieren's past and the true reason she keeps traveling. With the exam behind them, Frieren and her companions once again set out north, bound for Aureole, the land where souls rest.

⚠ Spoiler warning — tap to reveal
Serie grants Frieren her first-class certification, and during the interview she quietly takes interest upon learning Frieren was Flamme's pupil. It is revealed that Flamme and Serie, both among humanity's oldest mages, once parted ways over their conflicting ideals about defeating the Demon King. After passing, Frieren gains the travel permit that only first-class mages may hold for the northern lands. From here the story turns toward the northern plateau arc, foreshadowing a new threat in the form of Macht of the Seven Sages of Destruction. It is a turning point where the goal of the journey and her master's will quietly connect.
