Synopsis

His summer farm job over, Yugo Hachiken returns to the Ezono dorms with his worries still unresolved. Waiting for him is a reality he cannot avoid. The piglet he raised by hand in class, the one he named Pork Bowl and doted on, is now ready for shipment and slaughter. To raise a life, to take a life, to eat a life: the agricultural school forces this fundamental question on the city-raised Hachiken head-on. What astonishing decision will he make? This third volume holds one of the series' finest episodes, where the weight of life and the taste of food are bound inseparably together.

On the day Pork Bowl ships out, Hachiken agonizes over whether to see it off to the end or look away. After endless deliberation, he makes his decision: he spends his own wages to buy back all of Pork Bowl's meat. Together with his friends he processes it into bacon and smoked cuts, and through tears they eat every bite, and it is delicious. In that moment he understands the true meaning of the word itadakimasu with both body and heart. Rather than erasing a life as mere product, he takes responsibility for it to the very end. Quietly, a resolve to face farming takes root in him. A dreamless boy grasps, for the first time, an answer of his own.
