Synopsis

A string of night killings terrorizes Edo, and the Yorozuya are hired to investigate. Behind the bloody slayings lurk shadowy factions tied to the old anti-shogunate rebels, and the case takes a devastating turn when word arrives that Gintoki's old comrade Katsura has been cut down. As Gin digs deeper, he is dragged into the darker underbelly of the city. Between the tension come lighter chapters: a swordsman who falls for a train conductor, a woman with impossible speed, and Sacchan nursing a bedridden Gintoki with alarming devotion.

The killings trace back to an organization linked to surviving rebel factions, and Katsura's "death" turns out to be a staged deception. He has been hunting the culprits from the shadows and reappears at the crucial moment. Standing back to back like the war comrades they once were, Gin and Katsura crush the assassins. The affair is only the doorway to a far larger conspiracy, with Takasugi and the ghosts of the old rebellion looming over the arcs to come. Sacchan's nursing chapter, meanwhile, plays her hopeless crush on Gintoki for warm, chaotic laughs.
