Synopsis

A boy named Seita picks Gintoki's pocket, boasting that he'll buy out Yoshiwara's top courtesan, but his real aim is to rescue his captive mother. The Yorozuya step in for the mother and son caught in cruel misfortune, only for the affair to explode into open war against Housen, the "Night King" who rules the sunless underground pleasure quarter. Set in the ever-dark castle of Yoshiwara, Volume 25 ignites the grave, gag-free epic of the Yoshiwara in Flames arc, and a figure deeply entangled with Kagura's past soon steps into the light.

Seita's mother, Suzuran, is a courtesan held captive by the Night King Housen, and the Yorozuya take up her freedom as a banner to challenge Yoshiwara's entire power structure. Allied with Hinowa, the formidable woman who governs the underground, Gintoki and company face Kagura's brother Kamui standing before them as an enemy assassin, throwing the siblings' fate into sharp relief. Housen corners Gintoki with overwhelming might, and the early going is a desperate uphill fight, but the fury of Yoshiwara's people is gathered into a rallying counterattack. The battle to return light to a sun-robbed town begins, and the tension is cut off at its peak, straining toward the arc's coming climax.
