Synopsis

Tokugawa Nobunobu, newly enthroned as Shogun, launches a merciless purge against the faction loyal to the late Shigeshige. The Shinsengumi are forced to disband, and both commander Kondo Isao and police chief Matsudaira Katakuriko are sentenced to beheading. Kondo entrusts his feelings to Gintoki and urges his men to restrain themselves, but the fury of Hijikata, Okita, and the others is nearing its breaking point. Comrades or duty—this volume opens the Shinsengumi Crisis arc, testing the choices of men who live by their pride.

The Shinsengumi are branded traitors through the schemes of Nobunobu and Sasaki Isaburo, and Kondo is jailed and dragged to the edge of execution. Hijikata and Okita break the rules to rescue him, joined by the Yorozuya and Katsura. Pulling the strings behind Nobunobu are the Tendoshu and Utsuro, revealing a vast conspiracy to seize Edo itself. To protect Kondo's way of life as a samurai, Gintoki and the others storm the execution grounds. The story shows what the Shinsengumi choose—not as an organization but as comrades—and the upheaval surges toward all-out war in the next volume.
