Synopsis

In the third-round clash with Aoba Johsai, a struggling Karasuno swaps out Kageyama and sends in setter Sugawara. The man who has watched the team longest from off the court steadies a fraying flow with calm, unshowy play. Yet enemy ace Oikawa's serves and game control still leave no clear opening. This volume sets the two setters in sharp contrast: Kageyama who pushes with raw talent, and Sugawara who runs the team on connection and stability. It asks what Karasuno's real strength is, and the weight of a substitute and quiet bench work hits home.

The highlight here is Sugawara's entrance. Coming in just as Kageyama starts getting read, Sugawara steadies Karasuno with reliable connections and wide vision rather than flash, letting Hinata and the others regain composure. Oikawa's serves remain a threat and the match swings back and forth, but the team's hidden depth that Sugawara shows fires Kageyama up again. The two setters come to respect each other, and Karasuno's volleyball shifts from individual skill to true team play. As the final set nears, the desperate battle with Aoba Johsai barrels toward its climax in the next volume.
