Synopsis

Volume 18 broadens the ensemble of survivors scattered across a collapsed Japan. Alongside Hideo and Hiromi's flight, other holdouts are drawn carrying their own despair and hope. The ZQN become more than a simple threat, their biology and mutation gaining deeper mystery. Some humans scheme to exploit the infection, others are simply worn down by the struggle to live. Within a daily life numbed to horror, the volume quietly presses the questions of what it means to be human, and what it means to be a hero.

Among the ZQN swarms, individuals that clearly possess intelligence and act in coordinated groups are confirmed, signaling that the nature of the infection is changing. The peculiar reactions of Hiromi's half-ZQN body stir equal parts hope and dread that she may hold the key to a vaccine or a cure. Within other survivor groups, infighting and betrayal erupt, and human ugliness is depicted without mercy. To keep Hiromi safe, Hideo is driven toward decisions he has long avoided. Amid the end of the world, faint sprouts of hope flicker at this turning point.
