Synopsis

Having fled a Japan overrun by the ZQN, our reluctant hero reaches a sprawling shopping mall at the foot of Mount Fuji. On its rooftop, a fragile community of survivors clings to dwindling food and supplies, ruled by a raw, unspoken pecking order. Hideo, still clutching his rifle, is kept at the edge of the group, while the half-infected girl Hiromi reveals an eerie condition that makes her something other than prey. The safest place left may be the one quietly rotting from within.

Hideo is grudgingly accepted into the rooftop community but, as the only man with a loaded rifle, becomes an object of both fear and envy. The self-appointed leader hoards supplies and women, and the group's mood curdles by the day. Hiromi, though partly transformed, never bites — she reacts to human speech, and the survivors shelter her as a bizarre exception. Hideo finds his purpose in protecting her, gripping his gun and whispering that he is, after all, the hero. Beneath the calm, the next catastrophe is quietly stacking up.
