Synopsis

Gibson, having survived heart surgery, stunningly declares he will keep pitching. In his comeback game he ends up facing Goro as an opposing starter, yet the old rival coldly tells him it is unpleasant to duel with him. On the mound Gibson has lost his velocity and control, sliding into a first-inning crisis. Goro, meanwhile, has beaten the yips and clawed back to the majors, but his once-explosive fastball still refuses to return. When therapist Oliver reveals Gibson's unexpected past, both pitchers are pushed toward a fresh start. Caught between an ace's pride and the shadow of decline, this volume marks a turning point in the American-league arc.

⚠ Spoiler warning — tap to reveal
Gibson pushed Goro away out of pride, unwilling to show how much his ailing heart had weakened him. He guts out his comeback start on sheer will, but his prime form never truly comes back. Oliver's account of Gibson's past helps Goro understand why the man staked everything on baseball, and it becomes the key to Goro's own escape from his slump. True to the chapter titles about leaving the tunnel and a real beginning, Goro shakes off his doubts, finds the thread back to his fastball, and steps forward again with a bigger dream.
