Synopsis

With the final round of the Chunin Exams looming, Naruto crosses paths with an eccentric toad hermit calling himself Jiraiya, who drags him into brutal training to unlock the Nine-Tails' power. Beneath the tournament's spectacle, a conspiracy between the Sound and Sand villages quietly advances. Dosu challenges Gaara alone and is crushed in an instant, watched coldly by Kabuto and the Sand jonin Baki. As the young ninja push toward their dreams, the shadowy pact that could shatter the Leaf Village finally begins to take shape.

Jiraiya turns out to be one of the Legendary Sannin and a former student of the Third Hokage. By hurling Naruto off a cliff, he forces the boy to draw on the Nine-Tails' chakra and summon the toad Gamabunta. Dosu wasn't beaten by chance — Gaara killed him, his bloodlust spiraling out of control. Kabuto is Orochimaru's spy, and the plan is for Sound and Sand to strike the Leaf during the finals. By the last page, the village's peace is already on a countdown to ruin.
