Synopsis

Following the tragic death of the young Shogun Ietsugu, Tokugawa Yoshimune is brought from Kii to take the reins of Edo. Entering an Ooku defined by excess and intrigue, she immediately launches the Kyoho Reforms to combat famine and fiscal ruin. As the first woman Shogun to truly confront the rotting core of the shogunate, Yoshimune trades velvet robes for austerity, determined to save a starving nation. This volume chronicles the arrival of a ruler who wields logic like a blade, forcing the inner chambers to evolve or perish under the weight of her uncompromising vision.

With the end of Ietsugu’s brief life, the Tokugawa line faces a crisis, salvaged only by the arrival of Yoshimune. Unlike her predecessors, she remains entirely focused on the plight of the common people suffering in the streets, viewing the extravagant Ooku as an affront to her duty. Yoshimune systematically dismantles the opulent lifestyle of the inner chambers, stripping away the silks and the pretense of the men who have grown fat on systemic corruption. Her partnership with the ruthless Kanou Hisamichi allows her to cut through decades of political deadlock. She treats the men of the Ooku not as confidants, but as essential tools to stabilize the faltering shogunate. Watching her isolate herself, embracing the crushing solitude of the Shogunate to impose necessary change, creates an atmosphere of immense tension. She isn't merely ruling; she is surgically removing the cancer that has long plagued the Tokugawa regime, indifferent to the resentment of those she displaces.
