Synopsis

Following the scent of white plum, Kenshin and the others find a horrifying sight: Kaoru, a cross-shaped scar carved into her cheek and a sword driven through her chest. Crushed by guilt at failing once more to protect someone he loves, Kenshin loses the will to live and sinks into the "village of the fallen," a refuge for the utterly despairing. The Jinchu arc plunges into its darkest depths, where the hero is completely broken. Volume 24 asks whether Kenshin can ever rise again from the ruins of his own heart.

In truth, this "corpse of Kaoru" is an exquisite doll crafted by Enishi's men, Inui Banjin and Kujiranami's allies. But Kenshin, unaware, is utterly shattered and drifts to the village of the fallen as a hollow man. His friends realize Kaoru may still be alive and resolve to storm Enishi's island. Recalling the words of his master Hiko Seijuro and his wish to keep living, Kenshin slowly takes his first step back from the abyss. This is the turning point toward his revival.
