Synopsis

The Survey Corps presses on with the final operation to retake Wall Maria and reach the "truth" hidden in the basement of Eren's childhood home. But Reiner, Bertholdt, and the Beast Titan stand in their way, and the battle stays desperate—short on intelligence, manpower, and options. Amid mounting casualties, commander Erwin resolves on one last charge that stakes his soldiers' lives. Volume 20 is the heart of the Shiganshina showdown, as Levi, Armin, and the survivors press forward carrying the deaths of their comrades. Can humanity finally grasp the truth? Victory and loss crash down at once in an overwhelming, tear-soaked volume.

Erwin leads the new recruits in a charge against the Beast Titan, creating the opening for Levi to close in on Zeke, the man inside it. During the charge Erwin is mortally wounded and many young soldiers fall. Levi overpowers the Beast Titan but lets Zeke himself escape. Meanwhile, Armin executes a self-sacrificing plan to defeat the Colossal Titan Bertholdt, using himself as bait. His entire body is scorched and he is left near death. Few survive, and the volume closes by setting up the agonizing choice Levi will face next—whether to save Erwin or Armin.
