Synopsis

His crossbow wound from the duel with Hild finally healed, Thorfinn resumes his journey to raise the funds for his peaceful nation in Vinland. At the same time, the mighty warrior Thorkell, bored by a world grown too calm without war, is approached by Floki, an elder of the Jomsviking order, with a suspicious proposal. As fate would have it, Jomsborg, the Jomsvikings' stronghold, lies squarely along the sea route Thorfinn's party means to follow. Ambitions cross upon the waves, and the embers of a new war begin to swell.

Lured by the "profitable venture" Floki dangles before him, Thorkell scents battle and stirs to escape his tedious peace. Thorfinn's ship enters the Baltic and drifts, unwillingly, toward the struggle for control of Jomsborg. Behind Floki's scheme lies a succession war within the Jomsviking order, and threads are laid that will drag Thorfinn himself into its heart. The bitter irony runs deep: a party that set out seeking peace is pulled back, once more, into the world of the sword.
