Synopsis

Having entered the port city of Vritannis, Guts and his companions struggle to secure a ship bound for Elfhelm, the land where Casca might be healed. Amid this, the apprentice witch Schierke stops by the harbor and shields a group of Kushan children being hunted by slave traders, former pirates, only to fall into danger herself. To rescue her and the children, the young thief Isidro and the exiled Kushan princess Mule put on a wild display against the pirates. Without the help of the adults, can the children alone overcome this crisis? Set against the port town, this volume tests the growth of the next generation.

Isidro toys with the pirates through his native cunning and the keen edge of the Salamander Dagger he picked up along the way, and with Schierke's magic and Mule's bow added in, they save the children. Their struggle is proof that the young ones, always sheltered behind Guts's back, can now protect others by their own strength. Meanwhile, an uneasy air begins to hang over the city as the decisive battle with the Kushan looms. Behind the passage the party has finally secured, the empire's vast shadow is shown creeping over the port, sending the story rolling toward the carnage at the ballroom in the next volume.
