Synopsis

Whoever's name is written in this notebook dies. When a Death God named Ryuk drops his notebook into the human world out of sheer boredom, brilliant high-school student Light Yagami picks it up. After testing its power in disbelief, Light resolves to purge every criminal and forge a perfect world where he reigns as god. But a legendary detective known only as L takes up the hunt, launching a battle of wits between two geniuses who don't even know each other's face.

Light executes criminals en masse and is worshipped as the savior "Kira." Baited by L into a live broadcast, he kills the decoy on air and hands L a fatal clue: Kira lives in Japan's Kanto region and has access to police intel. L then walks straight up to Light, introduces himself under a false name, and shakes his hand. Each certain the other is his enemy, the god-to-be and the detective sworn to execute him lock into a duel with no exit.
