Synopsis

Volume 4 launches one of the series' finest arcs, the Tower of Heaven. On a seaside resort vacation, Erza is abducted by a mysterious group. She is dragged back to the Tower of Heaven, the very construction site where she once suffered as a slave, where a childhood friend turned nemesis, Jellal, awaits her. As the enemy schemes to resurrect a dark power through the forbidden R-System, Natsu, Gray, Lucy, and the cat Happy race to the rescue. Erza's long-buried past and tears are finally unleashed in this turbulent volume.

The heart of the volume is Erza's past and Jellal's transformation. As children, Erza and others were slaves building the tower, fighting alongside comrades like Simon and Millianna who plotted escape. But her dear friend Jellal was consumed by Zeref's darkness, betrayed the one-eyed Erza, and became the tower's ruler. The R-System is a sacrificial device to revive Zeref, and Erza is chosen as the sacrifice. The volume peaks as Natsu cloaks himself in flame and charges at Jellal, while Erza's tears tell of years of loneliness. Taut tension carries into the next volume's showdown.
