Synopsis

Kiyomaro Takamine is a brilliant but isolated middle-schooler who has given up on people. Then his father sends him a strange gift: Zatch Bell, a golden-haired mamodo child. When Kiyomaro reads a spell from the red book only he can decipher, a bolt of lightning erupts from Zatch's mouth. One hundred mamodo battle across the human world with human partners until only one remains to become king of the demon world. This first volume launches the bond between gentle Zatch and the reluctant Kiyomaro. Collects Levels 1-19.

Zatch has lost his memory and cannot recall why he is in the human world. But the moment "Zaker" fires, Kiyomaro realizes this fight is deadly serious. Once a truant who couldn't fit in, Kiyomaro rediscovers the courage to connect with others while protecting Zatch. The early enemies are rival mamodo hunting Zatch, and Kiyomaro learns to read the weakness in their spells so Zatch's lightning can strike. Zatch's vow to become a kind king becomes the emotional spine of the whole saga.
