Synopsis

To coax out the shut-in only son of a yakuza boss, Gintoki pries open the storehouse door only to find someone entirely unexpected inside. Then the gang's second-in-command suddenly turns a blade on him, and what should have been a simple pep talk spirals into a crisis that shakes the whole clan. Volume 22 also packs in the perpetual job-hopper Hasegawa's misery, a chaotic outbreak of a mysterious Tama fungus, a Shinsengumi alien hunt, and Katsura's daring jailbreak. It's classic Gintama variety, blending warmth and gags in equal measure.

The storehouse's supposed shut-in son has long since made his own way in the world; the one hiding away was the boss himself, impersonating his boy out of worry. The second-in-command's betrayal is a loyal act staged for the boss's sake, and once the clumsy family love is laid bare, Gintoki brokers a truce. The fungus panic is resolved when its source is found, and during the chaos Katsura busts out of his cell, shakes his pursuers with a disguise, and returns to his anti-shogunate cause. Hasegawa loses another job, but his refusal to break even at rock bottom draws both laughter and melancholy, closing on Gintama's signature tonal swings.
