Synopsis

Suzuran, a legendary oiran who once reigned over Yoshiwara, has spent her twilight years waiting for a single man, the customer with whom she exchanged vows of love in her youth. As Gin and the others search for him, they uncover the shocking truth that the man was the previous shogun himself, and they storm into Edo Castle to confirm it. The volume also collects tonally whiplashing shorts, from the rampage of the vicious wanted criminal Gedomaru to a chaotic New Year's cash scramble and Yamazaki's heartbreaking arranged meeting.

The man Suzuran waited for really was the former shogun, Sadasada Tokugawa, and their tragic romance, torn apart by the wall of social rank, is finally revealed. But the shadow of the Naraku assassins flickers around Sadasada, and the reunion soon reeks of political intrigue rather than simple nostalgia. Determined to protect Suzuran's single-hearted devotion, Gintoki resolves to step into the dark underbelly of the shogunate.
