Synopsis

Having gained real confidence from their training camp and practice matches, the Karasuno volleyball club finally steps into an official tournament. It is the first round of the Spring High prefectural qualifiers. Standing on the court amid the tension, the first-years must test the quicks and combinations they built in practice on a stage where a single loss ends everything. Hinata savors both the joy of finally standing on the official court he has longed for and the pressure of having to win. Volume 5 is a major milestone in Karasuno's story, the first time this once-random collection of personalities fights as a single team in a real match.

⚠ Spoiler warning — tap to reveal
In the opening match, Hinata's extreme nerves and mistakes hold Karasuno back early, but Kageyama, Tanaka, captain Daichi and the others prop one another up until the team gradually clicks. Piling up failures along the way, Hinata still draws the momentum their way with his decoy movement and fearless play, and lands that quick in an official match at last. Seizing the win, Karasuno truly feels that "we are a team that can fight for real." Waiting ahead are stronger opponents and the long road to a nationals no one has seen yet. Karasuno's charge begins in earnest from here.
