Synopsis

Hideo Suzuki and Hiromi's wandering through ZQN-eaten Japan widens to reveal the wider ruin of the world. In Volume 13, the new group they reach runs on its own rules that blur the line between ZQN and human. Some even claim to hear the ZQN's voices and command their swarms, and the pandemic mutates from mere disaster into a "new order." Hideo confronts a charismatic man who boasts of having brought a ZQN swarm under his command. He worships half-ZQN individuals like Hiromi as "evolved humanity" and has built a cult-like community that bends survivors to his will. Persuasion and gun barrels are aimed at Hideo at once, forcing him to choose between handing Hiromi over and shooting it out. In the chaos the swarm's control shatters, and the once-worshipped ZQN turn as one on the believers. Hideo grabs Hiromi's hand and flees the burning base, slammed once more by the truth that no safe place exists anywhere.
