Synopsis

Jiraiya sets out with Naruto on a journey to find the next Hokage candidate. But at their inn, two sinister figures in cloud-patterned cloaks appear: Sasuke's brother Itachi Uchiha and the rogue Mist ninja Kisame Hoshigaki. Hunting the power of the Nine-Tails, they move to abduct Naruto. Then Sasuke, who has lived only for revenge, bursts in and clashes with the brother he hates. The bond and hatred of the Uchiha brothers spark once more in a volume 17 heavy with foreboding, as the story turns toward the search for Tsunade.

Itachi and Kisame are after the Nine-Tails inside Naruto. At the inn Naruto is nearly taken, but Jiraiya drives the pair off with his toad techniques. Sasuke charges in and unleashes Chidori, only to be swatted aside by Itachi, who forces him to feel the crushing gap in their strength. Itachi coldly declares Sasuke is "not enough" and leaves, and Sasuke's thirst for revenge blazes hotter. This reunion becomes the seed that later drives Sasuke to Orochimaru. Jiraiya takes Naruto onward to find the next Hokage, Tsunade.
