Synopsis

Few works have captured the loneliness of a life lived by the sword as quietly as this. Vol. 24 follows Sasaki Kojiro, an extraordinary young man, as he climbs toward the summit of the blade amid the schemes and affections of those around him. Unable to speak, he communicates only through steel and his gaze — and that very purity makes him both the strongest and the most fragile of men. Musashi, too, reaches a moment where he must question what it means to keep winning. Inoue's brush renders the inner lives of swordsmen where killing intent and tenderness live side by side.

Kojiro's genius overwhelms everyone around him, drawing in those who would guide him and those who would use him. That he cannot understand human speech yet still clearly cares and is cared for is deeply moving. Strength, the volume suggests, is not only skill but a clumsy prayer to connect with another. Musashi suffers under the gap between his swelling reputation and his true self, and prepares to set out again in search of real strength. Ganryujima, where their paths will finally meet, still lies hazy in the distance.
