Synopsis

What does it truly mean to be "strong"? Takehiko Inoue's monumental portrait of the undefeated swordsman Miyamoto Musashi reaches Volume 29. Held prisoner for the "slaying of seventy," Musashi carries the deep wound to his right leg that quietly urges him to lay down the sword. Perhaps at last he can step off the endless spiral of killing—yet an unquenched attachment to the blade still smolders in his chest, tormenting him. A man who has only ever chased strength stops for the first time and asks himself why he has held the sword at all. From motion to stillness, from the outer world to the inner, this volume marks a turning point that draws Musashi's journey into deeper waters.

[Contains story details and outcomes] Imprisoned for the seventy-man slaying, Musashi nurses his gravely wounded right leg and stands at a crossroads over whether to give up the sword. Perhaps he need never cut anyone down again; perhaps he can escape this chain of blood—a relief-like feeling washes over him. Yet from deep within, a voice that refuses to abandon the blade will not fade, driving him into sleepless nights. A man who knew no way to prove himself but growing stronger begins, for the first time, to quietly reconsider what the sword truly is and what it means to live. With little in the way of flashy duels, this dense volume is carried entirely by the fierce struggle within.
