Synopsis

What does it truly mean to be "strong"? Takehiko Inoue's monumental chronicle of the undefeated swordsman Miyamoto Musashi continues in Volume 30. The deep ache in his right leg will not fade, and cut off from the exchanges of life and death, Musashi's road ahead looks dark and sunken. In days without answers, he quietly looks back on where he has been, longing to recover the feeling of his youth—when the sword, himself, and all the world felt like a single unbroken thread. A man who sought strength only outside himself turns inward for the first time, searching for the shape of a new "strength" within his bonds to nature and the people around him. More a journey of the heart than of duels, this is a volume of deep reflection.

[Contains story details and outcomes] His right leg not fully healed, Musashi can no longer run and cut as he once did. Torn from the life-and-death bouts that once defined him, he cannot see what to lean on to keep living. Carrying restlessness and emptiness, he retraces the days now gone. Once, when he gripped a blade, the wind, the earth, and his enemy all felt seamlessly one—he yearns to grasp that clear sensation again. Perhaps strength is not defeating others but reconnecting with the world. A new question takes root, and Musashi's inner self slowly begins to change in this quiet turning point of a volume.
