Synopsis

What does it truly mean to be strong? Vagabond keeps asking that question through the life of Miyamoto Musashi, the swordsman who fought more than sixty duels without defeat. In Volume 33, Musashi playfully shuts out all sound, and something surfaces from deep within him: the image of the one person he longs to meet again but never can, Sasaki Kojiro. With his senses honed to a razor's edge, Musashi turns inward, descending further and further into himself in silence. Instead of crossing blades with an enemy, he faces his own inner world, rendered with Takehiko Inoue's overwhelming artistry.

⚠ Spoiler warning — tap to reveal
With sound cut away, the phantom of the lost Kojiro rises in Musashi's mind. What if they had crossed swords once more? That impossible fantasy grips him in the quiet and will not let go. Beyond winning or losing, Kojiro has become something close to another self for Musashi. His sharpened senses point not outward but inward, sinking deeper and deeper, and Musashi begins to sense that the essence of strength lies not in cutting others down but in knowing oneself. This is not a chapter of the sword but of the heart, and Musashi's journey of the soul steps into a new phase.
