Cnut, the ruler who now unites England and Denmark, is desperate to solve a crippling shortage of funds, and he sets his sights on the wealthy Ketil farm, ensnaring Ketil's second son Olmar in a cunning trap. Realizing the scheme, Ketil's party flees home aboard Leif's ship, but Cnut and his elite warriors are already closing in behind them. As tension builds on the farm, the slave woman Arnheid quietly resists, her heart still bound to her dead former husband Gardar, and Ketil's fury erupts when he learns of it. Despite Thorfinn's wish to avoid war, the farm is dragged inexorably toward battle.
