Synopsis

Freed at last from his life of slavery, Thorfinn has one thing he must do before he leaves the farm: convince King Cnut, his one-time comrade, to end the war of conquest he began. Now the ruler who binds England and Denmark together, Cnut is all but unreachable, and in the ragged garb of a former slave Thorfinn can hardly get past the royal guards to meet him. Yet he presses forward, carrying his conviction straight to the king. The long slave arc reaches its conclusion, and here the new journey of a man who has renounced violence quietly begins.

Thorfinn breaks past the wall of guards, comes face to face with Cnut, and lays out his dream of reaching Vinland, a land free of strife. Toward the man once tied to his father Thores's death, he no longer holds up vengeance but an ideal. Choosing separate roads, king and wanderer, the two nonetheless recognize each other as men chasing their own "paradise." With Einar at his side, Thorfinn returns home to Iceland, reunites with the family he was long parted from, and takes the first step toward a grand voyage to open a new frontier.
