Synopsis

Volume 13 arrives after about two and a half years, and it brings a wonderful guest: Dad's mother, Grandma to Yotsuba, comes to stay at the Koiwai house and the whole place bursts into life. Grandma dotes on Yotsuba yet is strict about manners, so even free-spirited Yotsuba gets a little flustered. Over a few days the three generations clean together, cook together and go out together, all rendered with warmth. The heart of this volume is Grandma's visit. Yotsuba assumes she can be spoiled endlessly, only to be sharply scolded for bad manners, leaving her briefly crestfallen. She bounces back fast, though, and under Grandma's guidance she cleans and weeds the garden, growing just a touch more grown-up. It is endearing to see Dad turn slightly childish in front of his own mother. When Grandma finally leaves and Yotsuba sees her off, the quiet scene tugs at the heart. No big drama, just a volume where family bonds gently deepen.
