Synopsis

Now an official Spirit Detective, Yusuke receives his first major assignment: recover three sacred treasures stolen from Spirit World by a trio of demon thieves. He faces a colorful lineup of foes — Kurama, a fox demon hiding in a human body; Hiei, a fierce swordsman wielding an evil eye and blades of ice; and the beast-powered Gouki. Yusuke reclaims two of the treasures, but the last thief, Hiei, seizes his childhood friend Keiko as a hostage. This third volume marks a turning point, introducing Kurama and Hiei, who will become Yusuke's lifelong allies.

Hiei tries to use the Evil Eye treasure to turn Keiko into a demon, but Yusuke pours everything into his Spirit Gun and strikes Hiei down at the very last moment. Meanwhile, it is revealed that Kurama joined the theft only to save his dying human mother, and Yusuke refuses to treat him as a mere enemy. From this volume on, Kurama and Hiei shift from foes to Yusuke's dependable comrades. Beyond flashy battles, Togashi's habit of giving even villains real motives is firmly established here.
