Synopsis

Time has passed since L's death, and Light — now leading the task force as the second L — steadily builds the world he envisions. But two successors carrying on L's will emerge: the coolly analytical Near and the reckless Mello, and a new struggle over the Death Note begins. Mello kidnaps Light's sister Sayu and demands the notebook in exchange. The confrontations of the second half sharpen into focus as the board shifts into an unprecedented three-way war.

The mafia led by Mello abducts Sayu and demands the Death Note as ransom. Soichiro storms their base with the notebook, and thanks to Light's scheme the notebook is recovered with minimal loss — but in the operation Soichiro Yagami is shot and dies still believing in his son. Light's coldness, turning even his father's death to his advantage, stands out starkly. Mello vanishes with half his face burned, while Near quietly leads the SPK ever closer to the truth. In a world without L, the long battle of wits between Light and the two successors truly begins.
