Synopsis

Chaos erupts within the armed police Shinsengumi. Hijikata gets hold of a cursed blade rumored to devour its wielder's soul, and something changes in him: the stern demon vice-commander shockingly turns into an otaku. Amid the uproar, a man newly appointed as the Shinsengumi's chief of staff, Itou Kamotaro, quietly sets in motion a grand scheme that threatens the very survival of the corps. Sorachi's sci-fi comedy weaves a serious brewing-turmoil arc with a hilarious cursed-blade parody in Volume 19.

The counterfeit cursed blade Hijikata obtains, the "Benizakura," is actually a sword that curses its owner into becoming an otaku. What looks like a serious cursed-blade battle instead reduces the demon vice-commander to a pathetic figurine-loving man, wrecking readers' abs. In the latter half, new chief of staff Itou Kamotaro appears, plotting to remove commander Kondo and seize the Shinsengumi. Colluding with Takasugi's faction, his scheming raises the curtain on the Shinsengumi Crisis arc, launching a tense test of bonds and conviction.
