Synopsis

Sakamoto Tatsuma, the cheerful captain of the Kaientai, gets nabbed by space pirates, but that crew turns out to be the very outfit his first mate Mutsu once belonged to. This emotional arc finally reveals the startling past of how the two met and why their bond is what it is today. The volume also serves up Kondo's ridiculous turn as a thief and an absurd chapter where time in Edo suddenly freezes, delivering the wild whiplash between drama and gags that only Gintama can.

Mutsu's backstory shows the hand Sakamoto extended to a girl with no place to belong, and the real resolve behind his breezy grin, making clear the Kaientai is far more than a trading crew. Naturally it is Mutsu who pulls Sakamoto out of danger, their bond unshakable even unspoken. In the frozen-time chapter the characters' true natures spill out, with Kondo's stalker streak on full display. The pivot from heavy drama to total silliness is exactly what makes this volume such a great read.
