Synopsis

To escape a faction plotting his assassination, Shogun Tokugawa Shigeshige secretly slips out of Edo. His guards deploy a chain of body doubles to confuse the enemy, but a ninja disguised as an ally turns his blade toward the Shogun's neck on a tense journey. Between the danger, Gintama's signature comedy shines through with the Yorozuya minding a blacksmith's shop and a wild sports festival complete with a guardian spirit. Volume 56 sets the Shogun Assassination arc into full motion.

The body-double gambit unfolds under the protection of Hattori Zenzo and the Oniwabanshu, but a traitor hidden among the guards moves to take the Shogun's head. Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura shield the cornered ruler as the Shinsengumi and Oniwabanshu are drawn into an escalating defense. Behind it all lurk Takasugi's Kiheitai, the Harusame, and the shadowy Tendoshu. As the stage shifts toward the ninja village of Iga, all-out war looms in the next volume.
