Synopsis

Hanamichi Sakuragi has finally become a member of the Shohoku basketball team, but the tedious fundamentals drills forced on a beginner bore him to death. Dreaming only of thunderous dunks, he clashes daily with strict captain Takenori Akagi. Then a scrimmage is arranged pitting the first-years against the upperclassmen. Faced with the genuine skill his rival Kaede Rukawa puts on display, Hanamichi's fighting spirit and pride come roaring to the surface in Volume 2.

Hanamichi enters the scrimmage still unable to dribble or lay the ball in properly. Rukawa flaunts skills that work even against the seniors, and the gap between him and the raw beginner is glaring. Yet Hanamichi makes his presence felt through sheer leaping power and rebounding, even earning a grudging nod from Akagi. Slowly admitting the value of the basics, Hanamichi begins to feel in his body why the sport draws him in. His crush on Haruko remains, but a genuine passion for basketball itself is starting to bloom within him.
