Synopsis

The self-proclaimed rebound king, Hanamichi Sakuragi, comes into his own. His reckless, gritty dives for the ball breathe life back into the team, and Shohoku reclaims the rhythm they nearly lost. The once-hopeless gap that had ballooned past twenty points shrinks, before anyone realizes it, to just eight. Rattled by the surge of an opponent they had dismissed as harmless, even the bench of champion Sanno Kogyo begins to show cracks of anxiety. But superstar Eiji Sawakita has not yet bared even a fraction of his true power. When he finally strikes, the surging Shohoku will learn how high the real wall stands.

Spoilers

⚠ Spoiler warning — tap to reveal
Sakuragi's rebounds and fighting spirit prime the pump, and Rukawa, Mitsui, and Miyagi pile on points until the gap slips into single digits. But the one who rescues the rattled Sanno is, of course, Sawakita. He dominates Rukawa on both offense and defense, hurling his hunger — "I want to face someone stronger" — right at him. Rukawa, meanwhile, learns for the first time this game to lean on his teammates to win. The prideful genius passes to Miyagi — a small change that foreshadows the dramatic finish to come. Sakuragi, too, touches the deep joy of basketball in this volume.
